Description

These cotton scarves bring together the beauty of hand block printing and the expressive charm of appliqué. Each piece begins with a richly patterned, block printed base and is finished with hand-appliquéd Ambi (paisley) motifs placed along the borders.

While colors and motif placement may vary slightly, every scarf in this collection shares the same foundation of plant-dyed prints and careful handwork—resulting in a group that feels cohesive yet individually distinctive.

Origin: Handmade in India

How It's Made

This collection is created by a women-led handicraft enterprise in Western India, located in a drought-prone region where textile work provides vital livelihood opportunities. As member-owners of the cooperative, women gain pathways to both financial stability and social independence.

The process begins with hand block printing, where artisans carve wooden blocks and print cotton fabric by hand using plant-based, vegetable dyes. Once the printed fabric is fully dried, Ambi (paisley) motifs—a traditional symbol of celebration and prosperity in North and West India—are carefully hand-appliquéd onto the scarf.

Artisans use tanka embroidery, a simple straight-stitch technique, to secure and accentuate the appliqué. By varying stitch length and placement, they add subtle texture and rhythm to the design.

Natural Variations

Due to the handmade nature of our products and variations in device screens, you may find slight variations in color and/or craftsmanship. Even if from the same dye lot, slight variations in color may occur. This is not a defect, but a unique feature of handmade goods.
