Description

Lightweight and gently flowing, this mulmul cotton scarf is designed for everyday wear and effortless layering. Hand-appliquéd shamrock motifs—an enduring symbol of good fortune, resilience, and inner strength—bring a playful yet thoughtful design element to the soft cotton base.

Each scarf reflects subtle variations in stitch, appliqué placement, and color tone, making every piece one of a kind while remaining easy to style and wear.

Origin: Handmade in India

How It's Made

This scarf is created by a women-led handicraft cooperative in Western India, based in a drought-prone region where textile work provides vital livelihood opportunities. As member-owners, artisans gain pathways to both financial independence and greater social agency.

The process begins with handwoven mulmul cotton, prized for its softness and breathability. Artisans then prepare appliqué motifs using cotton fabrics dyed with azo-free dyes. These motifs are carefully stitched onto the base fabric using tanka embroidery, a traditional straight-stitch technique that allows for variation in stitch length and pattern.

Tanka embroidery is often used to overlay appliqué work, creating texture and visual rhythm while securing each motif by hand. The result is a scarf that brings together softness, symbolism, and skilled craftsmanship in a single, thoughtfully made piece.
