Description

These handwoven napkins are crafted from organic cotton yarns and dyed using the Ikat technique, a resist-dye process in which sections of yarn are carefully bound before dyeing to create subtle patterning and tonal variation once woven.

Each napkin is woven using Ikat-dyed yarns on manual looms, resulting in a soft yet durable textile suited for everyday use as well as special occasions. Pre-washed for comfort and ease of care, the napkins balance practicality with artisanal detail.

Production supports artisan makers in India who have learned handweaving and dyeing skills as a meaningful livelihood pathway. For many, this work offers stable, dignified employment in contexts where mainstream job opportunities may be limited, allowing them to build financial independence while contributing their craftsmanship to thoughtfully made textiles.

How It's Made

These napkins are produced by artisan communities in India through a Fair Trade–aligned initiative focused on inclusive employment and skill development.

The process begins with organic cotton yarns that are hand-dyed using the Ikat resist-dye method, where yarns are tied to prevent dye penetration in specific areas. This technique allows lighter and darker tones to emerge within a single dye bath. Once dyed, the yarns are carefully wound, warped, and woven on hand-operated looms.

Artisans involved in this work include physically challenged makers and their families, who receive training, steady employment, and opportunities to develop specialized textile skills adapted to their abilities. This approach enables participation in meaningful craft-based work while fostering economic stability, confidence, and social inclusion.

Natural Variations

Due to the handmade nature of our products and variations in device screens, you may find slight variations in color and/or craftsmanship. Even if from the same dye lot, slight variations in color may occur. This is not a defect, but a unique feature of handmade goods.
