These hand block printed napkins are made from kora cotton, an unprocessed and unbleached fabric prized for its natural off-white tone and reduced chemical use. The soft, neutral base allows the hand-stamped motifs to stand out with clarity and depth.

Each napkin features contemporary interpretations of geometric and floral patterns, carefully printed by hand using carved wooden blocks. In these designs, the edges are finished with delicate hand embroidery — a detail that adds an extra layer of visual interest and craftsmanship.

Produced by artisan families in South India, many of whom come from communities with long-standing traditions of block printing, these napkins reflect patience, skill, and thoughtful design — making them equally suited for everyday meals and elevated entertaining.

Artisans begin with kora cotton fabric, left in its natural, unbleached state. Hand-carved wooden blocks are dipped into low-impact dyes and stamped onto the fabric one color at a time. After each color is applied, the cloth must rest and dry before the next layer can begin — a slow, methodical process that ensures precision and alignment.

This deceptively simple technique requires dozens of careful impressions to complete a single napkin. For select styles, artisans then add embroidery along the edges to create visual interest.

Many artisans involved in this work come from families with deep roots in block printing. After migrating to urban areas in search of stable livelihoods, they now reconnect with their heritage craft through this Fair Trade initiative — working in an environment that values skill, patience, and artistic integrity while supporting artisan families and sustaining traditional techniques.
