These handwoven napkins are made from kora cotton, an unbleached and unprocessed form of cotton that preserves the fiber’s natural character and off-white tone while avoiding the heavy chemical treatments associated with conventional bleaching. The fabric is created by interlacing natural cotton yarns with selectively dyed yarns; a raised weave technique adds texture and strength while maintaining a refined, versatile aesthetic suitable for everyday use or elevated entertaining.

Produced by physically challenged artisans and their families in Northern India, each set supports meaningful, home-based employment in communities where access to mainstream jobs has often been limited due to social and economic barriers.

These napkins are produced by an artisan society in Northern India that was formed over two decades ago to support physically disabled artisans facing poverty, homelessness, and limited employment opportunities. Many artisans are not traditional weavers; instead, they are trained upon joining, allowing textile work to be adapted to their individual abilities. Artisans handweave the fabric on manual looms, using kora cotton yarns combined with selectively dyed yarns with low-impact dyes to achieve subtle pattern and tonal contrast.

The initiative operates within a Fair Trade framework, providing fair wages, skills training, and long-term support. Artisans work in home-based settings and receive additional benefits including housing assistance and shared welfare programs. A portion of profits is reinvested into community care, supporting elderly artisans and those whose disabilities limit ongoing work — helping create economic opportunity, dignity, and social acceptance through craft.
