Wrap yourself in this cozy, mulmul (a soft, luxurious cotton) scarf or gift it to a loved one. Shamrocks, an ancient Irish symbol of good luck, prosperity and inner strength, are hand-appliquéd with ‘tanka’ embroidery on this scarf. Created by a women's cooperative from a drought-prone region of western India that has over 600 women members. As member-owners, women gain avenues for financial and social independence.
A Fair Trade product. Handmade by artisans in India.
Artisans expertly employ tanka embroidery and appliqué techniques, accentuating the textures, design, and colors of stunning cotton and silk products. They apply simple tanka straight-stitch to create varied patterns including adjusting stitch length. Tanka stitch is also used to overlay appliqué work, mirrors, threads, and beads to a base fabric. Block printed and solid fabrics of various combinations are used for appliqué to give each piece a unique feel and expression. All fabrics used are dyed or block printed with azo-free dyes. The textiles are sourced from a number of different groups; many of which are local artisan communities or non-profits. Some of the fabric is handwoven.
