These photo note cards are crafted from recycled cotton hosiery waste — discarded fabric scraps from cotton garment production that are transformed into durable, tree-free paper. Free from wood pulp and chemical bleaches, the paper provides a smooth yet naturally textured writing surface that reflects thoughtful material use and sustainable design.

Each card features a front slit designed to securely hold a 4" × 6" photograph, allowing the sender to share a personal memory, travel moment, or meaningful image alongside a handwritten message. The interior remains blank to encourage personalization, making the cards suitable for celebrations, correspondence, or keepsake gifting.

Paired with coordinating envelopes and adorned with hand screen–printed motifs, these cards bring together storytelling, function, and artisan craftsmanship in a format designed for meaningful connection.

These photo note cards begin as cotton hosiery waste — leftover fabric scraps from garment production — which are reclaimed and transformed into handmade paper. Artisans blend the cotton scraps with water until the fibers break down into a fine pulp. At this stage, azo-free dyes are added to create soft, natural colors.

Using wire mesh screens, artisans hand-form individual sheets by pulling the screens through vats of pulp, shaping each sheet by hand. The wet sheets are carefully layered with fabric and pressed to remove excess water. Once dried, the sheets are pressed flat to create a smooth yet organically textured writing surface.

Some sheets are then hand screen–printed with decorative motifs, while others remain plain to highlight the natural character of the paper. Skilled artisans then cut, fold, and assemble the sheets into photo cards, carefully creating the front slit that allows photographs to be securely inserted while maintaining a clean, minimal design.

Throughout the process, water is reused, materials are reclaimed, and waste is minimized — reinforcing the environmental responsibility of the practice.

This work supports rural and low-income artisan communities in Northern India operating within a Fair Trade framework that prioritizes safe working conditions, fair wages, and long-term livelihood development. By transforming textile waste into thoughtfully designed stationery, these cards preserve traditional handcraft skills while reducing environmental impact.
