The design features repeating linear marks arranged in structured bands, creating a hatch-inspired striped composition that feels modern yet timeless. Hand block printing is a meticulous, labor-intensive craft practiced for generations. Artisans begin by carving the Hatch Stripe design into wooden blocks, one for each motif or color. Dye is carefully applied to the block and pressed firmly and evenly onto the fabric.

Each placemat requires dozens of individual impressions, with artisans reapplying dye frequently to maintain clarity of pattern. This slow, deliberate process ensures consistency while allowing subtle variations that make every piece unique.

The artisan group was formed with the support of a foundation to help displaced villagers — especially women — build sustainable livelihoods through traditional handcraft. Today, the community operates as an independent enterprise, providing steady income, skill development, and long-term economic stability.
