The Foundation tablecloths are woven from kora cotton, an unbleached and unprocessed form of cotton that preserves the fiber’s natural character and soft off-white tone while avoiding the heavy chemical treatments associated with conventional bleaching.

Using a raised weave technique, artisans interlace natural cotton yarns with selectively dyed yarns to create a textile with depth, strength, and subtle visual variation. The resulting fabric feels substantial yet refined — equally suited to everyday meals and more intentional gatherings.

Each tablecloth is handwoven by physically challenged artisans and their families in Northern India, where textile work provides meaningful, home-based employment in communities that have historically faced barriers to stable work.

These tablecloths are produced by an artisan society in Northern India that was formed over two decades ago to support physically disabled artisans experiencing poverty, homelessness, and limited access to employment. Many makers are not traditional weavers; instead, they receive training upon joining, allowing textile work to be adapted to individual abilities.

Artisans handweave the fabric on manual looms using kora cotton yarns combined with selectively dyed yarns colored with low-impact dyes. The initiative operates within a Fair Trade framework, offering fair wages, skill development, and long-term community support. A portion of profits is reinvested into housing assistance, elder care, and shared welfare programs — helping foster economic stability, confidence, and social inclusion through craft.
