This collection of table runners represents an elevated expression of banana fiber weaving, combining upcycled natural materials with intentionally dyed cotton yarns for a more structured, layered look. The interplay of color and texture adds visual depth while preserving the organic character of the fiber.

Each runner is handwoven by skilled rural artisans — predominantly women weavers — working within Fair Trade practices that support dignified, year-round livelihoods. The upgraded design approach, using dyed cotton yarns in the warp, results in richer patterns, greater definition, and a more sophisticated tabletop presence.

Designed to anchor the table without overwhelming it, these runners bring warmth, texture, and quiet craftsmanship to both everyday meals and special gatherings.

Naturally, banana plants bear fruit only once in their lifetime. During banana farming, the plant is cut close to the ground to allow new growth for the next season. The excess stems — typically treated as agricultural waste — are reclaimed and transformed into incredibly tough yet lightweight fiber.

In Southern India, these fibrous remnants are hand-stripped, dried, and twisted into durable ropes using hand-operated tools. The fibers are then woven primarily by women artisans on traditional, non-electric looms. Banana fiber is often blended with other natural materials such as river grass, jute, coconut leaf splinters, or bamboo, creating textiles with distinctive texture, strength, and visual character.

This slow, labor-intensive process transforms discarded plant material into functional, design-forward table linens while supporting sustainable livelihoods rooted in heritage craft.
