These pillows are crafted from cruelty-free silk, also known as Ahimsa or non-violent silk — a textile valued for its humane production method and natural beauty. Unlike conventional silk, where cocoons are harvested before metamorphosis, this silk is collected only after silkworms naturally emerge as moths, allowing fibers to be gathered without harming the insects.

The silk yarn is prepared and handwoven by tribal and rural artisan communities using traditional pit loom weaving techniques. This method produces textiles with natural depth, durability, and a refined luster that reflects the authenticity of handcrafted silk.

Dyed using low-impact, azo-free dyes, the pillows offer rich color while maintaining environmentally responsible production practices. Each pillow includes a down-alternative microfiber insert and hidden zipper closure, balancing luxury craftsmanship with practical functionality.

This pillow begins with cruelty-free silk production practiced by rural artisan communities in Northern India. After silkworms naturally transform into moths and leave their cocoons, artisans collect the empty cocoons and carefully process the silk fibers into yarn.

The yarn is dyed using low-impact, azo-free dyes and then handwoven on traditional wooden pit looms. These looms allow artisans to control weave structure, tension, and finish, producing textiles that preserve heritage weaving techniques while supporting contemporary design.

Once woven, the silk fabric is cut, sewn, and assembled into pillow covers before being paired with down-alternative microfiber inserts and finished with hidden zipper closures.

This work supports a broad artisan network that includes cocoon cultivators, dyers, weavers, tailors, and finishing artisans. Operating within a Fair Trade framework, the initiative provides safe working conditions, fair wages, skill preservation, and long-term economic opportunity across rural artisan communities.
