These pillows are crafted from cruelty-free silk, also known as Ahimsa or non-violent silk — a textile prized for its ethical production method and natural luster. Unlike conventional silk, where cocoons are harvested before metamorphosis, this silk is collected only after silkworms naturally emerge as moths, allowing the fibers to be gathered without harming the insects.

Because the cocoon is opened naturally, the silk fibers form shorter strands that are carefully handspun into yarn. This process creates subtle texture, occasional natural slubs, and a soft matte sheen that highlights the authenticity of handspun silk.

The silk front is paired with a handwoven cotton backing to provide structure, durability, and everyday usability. Dyed using indigo derived from the indigo plant, the pillow displays rich tonal depth that evolves beautifully with the handmade character of the textile.

Each pillow includes a down-alternative microfiber insert and hidden zipper closure, combining luxury craftsmanship with practical comfort.

This pillow begins with cruelty-free silk production practiced by indigenous weaving communities in Eastern India. After silkworms naturally transform into moths and leave their cocoons, artisans collect the empty cocoons and carefully extract the silk fibers.

Because the fibers are no longer continuous filaments, they are handspun using traditional spinning wheels. This technique creates a yarn valued for its natural irregularities, soft texture, and organic luster. The yarn is then dyed using indigo, a plant-derived dye known for its layered, living color.

The silk yarn is handwoven on traditional zidagar frame looms constructed from bamboo and other locally sourced materials. These looms allow artisans to control tension and texture, creating textiles that cannot be replicated through mechanized production.

The finished silk textile is paired with handwoven cotton backing and sewn into pillow covers, then completed with a hidden zipper and down-alternative microfiber insert.

This work supports indigenous women weavers and operates within a Fair Trade framework that promotes safe working environments, fair wages, skill preservation, and long-term economic opportunity within artisan communities.

Throughout production, pesticides, harsh chemicals, and industrial machinery are avoided, reinforcing both environmental responsibility and the preservation of traditional craft knowledge.
